What Is A Root Canal?

If you have a tooth that has been severely damaged, decayed, or has a serious infection your Edmond Dentist will perhaps recommend a root canal. When a dentist performs a root canal it’s to save the rest of the tooth from the decay or damage that’ s made its way into the interior of the tooth.

What Can You Expect From A Root Canal?

Inside the tooth is a soft pulp made out of nerves and blood vessels, these nourish the tooth and keep it healthy. If the pulp is exposed it can be opened up to infection, the main ways this happens is via a deep cavity, a cracked or fractured tooth, or trauma to the tooth. If these conditions are left untreated the tooth can become infected, which can be incredibly painful. In some cases, an abscess can form inside the tooth or bone around the root. The infection could also cause a patient to lose the tooth entirely

What Happens During The Procedure?

During the procedure, your Edmond Dentist will:

  1. Create the opening in the tooth to remove the root through.

  2. Extract the tooth’s nerve tissue.(The inside of the tooth may also be treated with a germ-killing medicine)

  3. Clean the inside of each tooth and the canal they’ve made.

  4. Fill and seal the root canal to prevent future infection.

  5. Place a crown or filling to be a definitive restoration.

A root canal treatment can take more than one office visit depending on the difficulty or number of root canal’s that have to be performed. Your Edmond Dentist is able to manufacture crowns on site so that will cut down on the time it would take most dentists to finish the procedure. Many patients worry about pain, but the use of local anesthetic ensures that a patient won’t feel pain during the procedure and once the problem tooth is removed a patient won’t feel the pain of the damaged tooth.
